What qualities make for
good relationships?
Dear Positive Way, How can I learn to be a good friend or colleague
to someone? What qualities would you say are important to have good
relationships with others? Thanks! signed, Learning, age 43
Dear Learning:
Here is a list of qualities that I feel are important to have good
relationships with others:
-
Dependability - keep your
word. Follow through on your promises.
-
Honesty - Say what you
mean and mean what you say. Don't say one thing to their face and
then say the opposite behind their back. Be a straight shooter.
-
Accept and Support - when
needed. Don't judge or demean. We all want to be accepted for who we
are and not judged in anyway.
-
Listen attentively - when
needed. Everyone could use a good listener. Don't try to fix
their problem just listen and empathize as best you can.
-
Don't assume anything -
No hidden expectations - Don't smother or expect something in return for
your friendship. Give your friendship without hidden expectations.
If you have any expectations of the other person communicate those early
on and don't think they should know this - don't assume anything.
-
Be sincere - Sincerity is
key to all good relationships. Don't pretend anything. People
will sense insincerity early on and that will ruin any chance of a good
relationship.
Sincerity is defined as: without deceit, pretense, or hypocrisy; truthful;
straightforward; honest; genuine; real.
We all could use a friend
with these qualities - don't you agree?
