Meditate
to reflect upon; study; ponder
Many books on spirituality and spiritual growth emphasize the
need to mediate. Many recommend long meditations and encourage the longer
the better. Is that really necessary for spiritual growth and development?
Not in my opinion. I don't think we need to meditate for very long
periods of time in order to receive the benefit of meditation. In fact, I
think just stopping for a moment or two and concentrating on your breath is good
enough at the beginning of anyone's spiritual journey. I personally use
what I term OM Meditation. OM stands for One Minute
Meditation. I use them often during the day. I just stop for
a moment and concentrate and ponder my breath. I take a deep breath in and
notice how it feels to breathe in through my nose. I then release the
breath usually through my mouth and notice how it feels to do that.
Sometimes I just breathe in and out through my nose and notice how my stomach
inflates and expands and how my lungs feel with a full inhalation of breath.
I then release the breath slowly and it relaxes me and calms me down for that
moment.
If you are one of those people that can mediate for a long
time that is wonderful. However, if you are not one of those people then
don't feel bad about not being able to do it like the books suggest. Just
begin with observation and reflection on your breath. Ponder the breath.
Study your breath. Then move on with your day. OM Mediation
is very effective and it will relax you and allow you to be in the present
moment. Do a OM Mediation as often as you wish throughout the day.
One Minute Mediation is effective so stop, relax, study, and
ponder your breath. Enjoy!
NOTE: I just recently
found this great free podcast titled "Touching the Stillness" with Rev. Paulette
Pipe. This is a great guide and tool for mediation. You can find
this free podcast on Itunes or Unity fm radio. Also I have used the
following guide and CD by Esther Hicks
for mediation and I am having great success with
it so please check it out for yourself Guided Meditations
