Broken Hip

An estimated 340,000 Americans suffer a broken hip annually and about 85,000 of them do not survive the first year.  About 30% recover fully.  I certainly hadn't planned on being any part of the statistics but an ice storm, an instant suspended in mid-air, a stone step and gravity conspired to break my left hip.  Hip fractures in the elderly are most often caused by a fall.  I didn't feel elderly at 59 but my hip didn't know the difference.

The following broken hip chronicle tells my currently ongoing journey though recovery not only from the broken hip but also drug withdrawal from a physical dependence on narcotic pain killers that I took in massive doses to moderate the tremendous pain from my shattered femur (broken hip).  I hope what I learned might help you if you or someone you know has a broken hip.
