A Patient’s Prayer I pray that all medical professionals accept and share these thoughts. We come to you sick, broken, wounded and afraid. We meet in the dark recesses of a strange place at the end of your exhausting shift or in the middle of a seemingly overwhelming workload. Our dignity is in tatters, flapping like the open-back gown we wear. Independence is replaced by a terrifyingly total dependence. Bursting bladders and bowels are tied to a call button a thousand miles long. Sharp intellects are dulled by fear, pain, brain injury, and/or powerful narcotics. For you this is your jobs but for us it is our lives; damaged, disrupted and at your mercy. For us the smooth effective practice of your skill is essential to our health and mental well being. And for us the slightest of human kindness of your work, your touch, your deeds, and human connection is a lifeline to hope. Words seem insufficient to tell you how important and appreciated your “work” is to me and the countless others that pass through your hands. Those of us, who can, leave on a road to recovery. In any case, we all leave giving thanks for having been touched by your care. Please know that you can and do make a huge positive difference in our lives. And know that there are angels among you.
