Recovery from Downsizing
The Question:
Dear
Business Solutions,
what
strategies can be instituted to improve morale and image when a company has
gone through downsizing? Signed largebank.
Our Response:
Dear largebank,
you
pose a serious and important question. Certainly conditions are very
difficult within a company that has undergone a reduction in staff of
about 2,500 individuals. There is no easy answer but I would consider the
following strategies:
1. Increase
communications at all levels of the company to provide reassurance that
the business goals are being achieved and that no further changes will be
made without clear advance notice to the people involved.
2. Make stress
counseling available to all.
3. Increase the
visibility and availability of management within the operating ranks.
They need to own the problems and the solutions.
4. Take steps to insure
that people have the training and skills necessary to do their (new) jobs.
5. Teach managers and
staff how to deal with change.
6. Actively solicit
feedback from staff and take appropriate positive action on the findings.
To be rather blunt, it is
my view that management has the responsibly to do everything it can to
avoid such situations in the first place.
Downsizing may be a symptom of inadequate management strategy. However
when conditions provide no alternative it is their responsibility to
mediate the damage as well as possible with strategies such as the above.
