The grand total score is the sum of all the individual scores for each circumstance.
Interpretation:
The higher the score the more immediate benefit a professional facilitator is going to bring to the circumstance. Any grand total score over 15 is a strong indicator for a facilitator. Two or more 4 or 5 individual circumstance scores may warrant a facilitator. The maximum risk of hiring a facilitator or using one from in-house is a lower return on investment for their time/fees. The risk for not hiring a facilitator may be very significant. The safe thing to do is to ask a professional facilitator to review the circumstance and give you their advice.
In any event, training in facilitation, meeting management, and project management can pay off substantially.

What a professional facilitator does for you:
A professional facilitator is there to help you meet your specific meeting objectives. A facilitator focuses on the process and flow of interactions, meetings, and events. They do not generally become involved in the content. They may, for example:
| Allow management and staff to focus on the important matters without having to worry about the details of running the meeting | |
| Provide organization and structure for you | |
| Minimize or even defuse interpersonal conflict while addressing hot issues | |
| Maximize the probability that meeting objectives will be met on time | |
| Help groups reach understanding and/or consensus | |
| Solve problems | |
| Managing the meeting climate for the right balance of humor and seriousness | |
| Provide a neutral party to moderate discussions or help see the big picture | |
| Train how to run optimal meetings |
Some of the tools and skills of a professional facilitator:
The skilled facilitator has a toolbox of methods that can be used as appropriate. For example:
| Meeting and time management skills | |
| Creative Problem Solving methods | |
| Training games and activities that teach and get results | |
| Mediation tools and skills | |
| Small and large-group discussion techniques | |
| Team building methods | |
| Decision making and consensus building methods |
