If you don't want to be a headline talking about how the neighborhood or your town doesn't want you anymore, take care of your community relations. Good organizations are good citizens as well. They give back to their communities rather than to just take from them. Jobs and fair wages are an important contribution and so are compliance with ordinances and laws that keep people safe and well but you can do more. Consider how you might encourage your employees to be involved in community affairs and charity for the greater good. You will be amazed at what can be accomplished even on tight budgets. Managers can, for example, volunteer their business expertise to help non-profit organizations or your company might sponsor a blood drive. Neither of these two ideas cost a dime and yet both are of great value. It's simple, it's rewarding, and it's good for everyone. Communication is a powerful way to help build your presence in your community. Don't be shy about letting people know what you are doing. Press coverage not only attracts customers but it also helps people appreciate the contributions that you are making to the economy and the community.
